September 30, 2024

Finally, the weather feels like fall.  Granted, that’s early in the morning this time of year here in eastern North Carolina.  However, temperatures dropped to the upper 50’s more than a few days this month, making the maple leaves brighten to red.

To celebrate the calendar change, I’ve folded my fall-themed quilts over the backs of the couch and LazyBoys.  Last year’s project, my Weaverly quilt made with Robin Pickens’ Forest Frolic fabric covers my bed.  I’ve fluffed the pumpkin pillows and plugged in my Bath and Bodyworks Wallflowers, enjoying the scents of fireside marshmallows in the kitchen. And the hallways.  And my sewing room.

It’s fall ya’ll!

Naturally, the newest Northcott panel and coordinates for Silent Lake by Iosif Derecichei have caught my fall-loving heart.  The panel with its red canoes, rich green pines, and turquoise waters remind me of vacations in the mountains and family road trips.  I love the brilliant oranges in the striped wide backing and the lengthwise 45" stripe of those birch trees.  Simply stunning.

Tempting too for beginners and experienced sewists alike.  I’ve already set up a class for early November. Click here to join.

In fact, it’s really the start of another series I’m slowly building thanks to two books I found—Fun with Panels and Playful Panel Quilts by Cyndi McChesney. Surprisingly, I’d never used a panel in a project before working at Quilt Lizzy.  I’ve collected many for years, but it was working my “retirement” job that freed me to explore my quilting and sewing skills more.  McChesney’s books have inspired me to mix many of the skills I’ve been honing over the last few years. They are skill based not product driven. Imagine a class where everyone makes completely unique quilts inspired by their own panel collections.

If you too are drawn to panels, find her books and join me at Quilt Lizzy.
