Have you ever gotten a moment free to sew and then found yourself unable to sit down and begin?

I have lately, and I’m not sure why.

My sewing room is clean and organized.  Labelled project boxes with fabrics and patterns line shelves.  Threads and tools are an arm’s reach away from my Altair.  Class preparations have deliberately been pushed to the side so that I can sew for my family and myself.  I am NOT afraid of making a mess as I create.

But I can’t seem to choose what to sew.  Is this a crafter’s version of writer’s block?

Quilter’s block?

Sewist’s stall out?

Becky Thompson, vlogger on Power Tools with Thread, would say, “Go sew something.” I've sewn two sets of curtains.  One used Tides of Color for my coastal themed bathroom.  The second set, made from Colorworks Solid black, hangs in my daughter’s bedroom.  I used my Triumph’s pintuck foot for a tailored, classic touch.  She loves them.  I’ve also hemmed some pants.  But that’s not doing my soul as much good.

Pat Sloan would say sew for 10 minutes every day.  I started watching her during the covid lockdown, and that’s how I set up my boxes.  If I plan a trip, she recommends grabbing my box with its pre-cut, preplanned project.  That way, there isn’t any struggle at all.  She would also suggest setting a deadline for one (or all) of my bins and work backwards, filling in dates with the end in mind.  Goodness knows she works on five or more projects at a time.

My head is very clear.  I do have a Christmas quilt top ready to go, strips cut, half-square triangles set to sew.  My Triangle Square–up Ruler is the perfect tool for making 200 or more go quickly. I will finish the blocks Sunday and Monday.  The rows will take me a day or two more.  I’ll have it quilted and ready to gift it by November.

My heart says, “Go shopping for new fabric.”

Road trip!
